WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement in reaction to the announcement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that the North Korean government is responsible for launching a destructive cyber attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment:
“The recent destructive cyber attacks on Sony and related threats of violence on American moviegoers are deeply disturbing. Whether the perpetrator is North Korea or another bad actor, the United States takes these actions seriously. In light of this attack, it is critical that Congress continues to work with the Administration and stakeholders to bolster our defenses in cyberspace and better protect our citizens, businesses, and the values that we cherish. Part of that effort includes working on ways to strengthen our cybersecurity laws. While we have made important progress on cybersecurity legislation this year, we still need to take additional steps to keep up with this evolving cyber threat. I will stay in contact with the Administration as our nation addresses this latest attack and will continue to work with my colleagues in the 114th Congress on our nation’s evolving cybersecurity needs.”
