WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Carper (D-Del.) welcomed the announcement of President Obama’s intent to nominate Alejandro Mayorkas to be the next Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security:
“The President’s nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas as the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security is welcome news. This position is critical in helping carry out the Department’s mission to protect and secure all Americans, and we cannot afford for it to be left vacant for long. Former Deputy Secretary Jane Holl Lute left big shoes to fill but I believe Mr. Mayorkas’ depth of experience, and particularly his current role as Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, has prepared him well to serve with Secretary Napolitano and help lead the Department. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Committee to consider his nomination in a thorough and timely manner.”
