WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., issued the following statement Friday on the Administration’s announcement that certain young immigrants would not be deported
“I support the Administration’s action today to offer relief to tens of thousands of deserving young people who were in danger of being forced out of the country they consider home.
“We need tough enforcement of our immigration laws with common sense exceptions that are fair and humane. Secretary Napolitano’s new standards for prosecutorial discretion in immigration enforcement seem to meet that test.
“Young immigrants who were brought here as children and have grown up to achieve and serve should be welcomed into our community, not forced out of it. Ultimately, though, a permanent solution must come from Congress and I urge my colleagues to rally behind the DREAM Act as well as comprehensive immigration reform.”
