LIEBERMAN REACTS TO HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE

WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Wednesday issued the following statement in reaction to the devastating earthquake in Haiti:

“Hadassah’s and my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti after this most devastating natural disaster. Thousands of people are dead and injured. Government buildings, hospitals, schools, businesses, and homes have been leveled. And the island nation needs the most basic sort of disaster assistance to help it dig out of this tragedy.

“The President has appropriately pledged the full support of the United States government, and private aid is already on its way. I am confident that the State Department will coordinate humanitarian assistance to Haiti efficiently, with the help of other federal agencies. The Department of Homeland Security, for example, has lent Coast Guard and FEMA assets to assist in the disaster recovery efforts.

“The people of Haiti must know that they can count on the American people for help.”
