LIEBERMAN HAILS OBAMA OPEN GOVERNMENT DIRECTIVE

WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., issued the following statement Tuesday in reaction to the Administration’s announcement of its Open Government Directive, which establishes requirements and deadlines for agencies to take specific steps to improve the “transparency, participation, and collaboration” of their work through greater use of the internet.

The President’s Open Government Directive is heartily welcomed by those of us who have worked to make government more transparent and accountable to the American people. Back in 2002, I authored and Congress passed the E-Government Act, which helped spur federal agencies to make documents and services more accessible to the general public.

"The federal government has come a long way since 2002 and today, it takes a giant step closer to taking full advantage of available information technologies to maximize not just the transparency, participation, and collaboration of people with their government but also to maximize management efficiency.

“I look forward to working with the Administration to implement the goals of this memorandum to allow citizens to engage more with the government that serves them.”
