WASHINGTON, DC – The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, led by Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn. and Ranking Member Susan Collins, R-Me., Monday reported out the nomination of W. Craig Fugate to be Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and John T. Morton to be Assistant Secretary of Immigration and Customs Enforcement by an unanimous voice vote.
“As Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Mr. Fugate has provided strong leadership, helping guide the State of Florida and relevant local governments through a range of challenges, including several devastating and deadly hurricanes,” Lieberman said. “Mr. Fugate has the support of his peers, and everything I know of his record suggests he is an excellent choice for this job. I am pleased the Committee has moved quickly to approve his nomination. “I am also pleased that the Committee has approved Mr. Morton to head Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. His extensive work experience at the Department of Justice makes him uniquely qualified to lead the agency at this pivotal period in its history. I look forward to working with Mr. Morton in his new position.” Collins said: “This Committee’s comprehensive investigation into the flawed response to Hurricane Katrina revealed fundamental problems with our nation’s preparedness for catastrophic disasters. As a result of our Committee’s work, Congress passed the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act in 2006. Our nation’s ability to prepare for and respond to all disasters has improved dramatically due to this legislation. I am encouraged that Mr. Fugate offers his support for this landmark law, and I look forward to working with him as he continues to implement these reforms.” |
