WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman ID-Conn., Wednesday released the following statement in response to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff’s year end speech:
“The American people are safer today than they were five years ago in part because of the Department’s work. But an enormous amount of work still remains to be done. We need to improve employee morale and expand the reach of the agency to protect as many vulnerable targets as we can. And we must continue building an emergency management system capable of responding to all the threats we face, whether from terrorists or natural disasters. When we established the Department, we knew it would it would take years for such a massive reorganization to begin bearing fruit. With strong leadership at the Department and strong Congressional oversight, I am confident the Department will continue to improve.”
