WASHINGTON — Following a number of floor speeches by members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday night in support of right to try legislation, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, encouraged Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and the House of Representatives to promptly take up and pass his bill, S.204, the Trickett Wendler, Frank Mongiello, Jordan McLinn, and Matthew Bellina Right to Try Act of 2017.
“I applaud my colleagues in the House for their support of right to try legislation that would give many American families hope. The time has come for the House to pass this bill. Every day that Congress fails to act is a day in which potentially thousands of terminally ill patients lose hope. I encourage Speaker Ryan and the House to take up this important bill immediately and pass it so that President Trump can sign it into law.”
Johnson and Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) sent a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee in October encouraging the House to take up the bill immediately. The letter can be found here.
The Johnson-Donnelly bill that passed the Senate in August can be found here.
Vice President Pence and the White House also indicated support of right to try earlier this year.
Thirty-eight states have passed right to try bills on an overwhelmingly bipartisan basis.
