Border and National Security Top Johnson Discussion with DHS Secretary Nominee General John Kelly

WASHINGTON — Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, met Thursday afternoon with President-elect Donald Trump’s designated nominee for Homeland Security secretary, Gen. John Kelly.

After the meeting, Johnson said:

“General Kelly’s military background, especially as commander of Southern Command, makes him ideally suited to address the security challenges facing America today. During our meeting, we discussed border security, cybersecurity, and protecting our critical infrastructure.”

“I also appreciate that General Kelly has a firm understanding of the threats facing the United States at home and abroad, including the threat from ISIS and other extremists. Leading the Department of Homeland Security is one of the most important jobs in government.  I look forward to working closely with General Kelly to expedite his confirmation and help make America safer and more secure.”

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has legislative jurisdiction for the Department of Homeland Security, including nominations subject to Senate confirmation.
