WASHINGTON — Following reports that the FBI on Thursday arrested three people with connections to the individuals at the center of the December terrorist attack in San Bernardino, Calif., including the brother and sister-in-law of gunman Syed Rizwan Farook, Sen. Ron Johnson, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, had this to say:
“I appreciate the work and efforts of law enforcement to keep our homeland safe – it is a top priority we all share. I hope these arrests will shed light on what happened in San Bernardino and on the need to enforce our immigration laws. It shouldn’t take a terrorist attack to spur the DHS to investigate and prevent visa fraud. My committee remains committed to conducting thorough oversight of the attacks in San Bernardino and DHS’s enforcement of our immigration laws.”
Chairman Johnson recently revealed during a hearing that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents were alerted by the FBI that Enrique Marquez, who supplied the weapons that Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik used to carry out the attacks in San Bernardino on Dec. 2, 2015, was scheduled for an immigration hearing at USCIS in San Bernardino on Dec. 3, 2015, together with his wife. According to an HSI memo from earlier this year, when HSI agents arrived at the USCIS office to detain Marquez, the USCIS denied the HSI agents entry into the building and later refused to provide relevant immigration documents to HSI.
