WASHINGTON — Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee said this Tuesday in response to President Obama’s plan to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and transfer detainees to the United States:
“President Obama’s plan to close the Guantanamo Bay facility is contrary to the will of the public and a bipartisan majority in Congress — expressed repeatedly over a number of years. Last year, along with 90 of my Senate colleagues, I voted for the defense law that included a provision prohibiting funds from being used to transfer or release Guantanamo detainees to the United States. President Obama signed that bill into law.
“Keeping America and Wisconsin safe from Islamic terrorists requires an effective intelligence gathering capability. Closing Guantanamo Bay will reduce our capability. I will continue to oppose closing Guantanamo despite the administration’s decision.”
