Chairman Johnson Releases Report Detailing Wasteful Obamacare Tax Credits

WASHINGTON — Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released a report on Monday detailing problems in the distribution of Obamacare tax credits. The report, “Affordable Care Act Premium Tax Credits: HHS and IRS Lack Plan to Recover Improperly Spent Taxpayer Dollars,” focuses on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service’s wasteful practice of distributing cost assistance in the form tax credits to Obamacare enrollees without first verifying the enrollees’ citizenship or lawful presence in the United States.

Chairman Johnson’s inquiry found that CMS, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, distributed an estimated $750 million of taxpayer funds in the form of tax credits to individuals who were later unable to prove their citizenship or lawful presence in the country. Additionally, the report found that the Internal Revenue Service lacks an effective plan to recoup these improperly awarded funds.

The report can be found here.
