WASHINGTON – On Tuesday morning, Senator Susan Collins, Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, received an update from Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security, on the New York City bombing attempt. The briefing came hours after the arrest of a suspect in the case.
“I applaud the quick and effective investigative work by federal, state, and local authorities that led to the identification and arrest of the suspect, Faisal Shahzad,” Senator Collins said. “Secretary Napolitano informed me that Customs and Border Protection officials removed Shahzad from a departing airplane at JFK airport and arrested him.
“Law enforcement and intelligence authorities continue to follow up on a number of ongoing leads,” Senator Collins added. “This attempted attack reminds us once again that terrorists are unrelenting in their desire to kill Americans. We cannot let down our guard and must meet this ongoing threat to our security with strength and resiliency.”
