SENATOR COLLINS ANNOUNCES PORTLAND POSTAL STATION WILL REMAIN OPEN

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Susan Collins, Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which has oversight of the U.S. Postal Service, announced Friday that the U.S. Postal Service has informed her that it has removed a Portland downtown postal station from its list of potential closures.

The U.S. Postal Service released an updated list today of stations still under consideration for closure. Station A, at 622 Congress St., was initially on the list. As of today, it is no longer under consideration for shuttering as a part of the service’s nationwide, cost-cutting initiative.

Senator Collins said while she is pleased that residents in downtown Portland who rely on this post office will continue to have access to its services, the Postal Service needs to continue to look for ways to overcome its current financial crisis.

“I urge the Postal Service to continue to find ways to cut costs without cutting customer service,” Senator Collins said. “The Postal Service must continue to find ways to create new streams of revenue and to build more lines of customer service, to both the individual and business consumers.”
