WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Susan Collins, Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, today released the following statement after President Bush nominated acting Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) director David Paulison to be permanent head of the agency. The Administration also announced its nominations of Vice Admiral Harvey Johnson as Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of FEMA, and Deidre Lee as Deputy Director of Operations for FEMA.
“David Paulison has 30 years of fire and rescue services experience, including his position as Administrator for the U.S. Fire Administration. It is clear that Mr. Paulison has a good understanding of first responder issues and is well-respected within the fire and rescue community. Mr. Paulison will face many challenges within FEMA as he undertakes the difficult task of trying to repair the nation’s emergency management structure.
Vice Admiral Johnson has had a long and successful career in the United States Coast Guard where he is admired for his dynamic, results-oriented personality.
Deidre Lee is one of the most well-respected procurement officials in government and I am pleased that she has been chosen to become the next Deputy Director of Operations for FEMA.”
