WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill serves as the top-ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). McCaskill issued the following statement today to mark Missouri’s Severe Weather Awareness Week, which runs from March 4 to March 10 and is coordinated by FEMA and other national, state, and local agencies:
“From historic flooding to devastating tornadoes, Missouri communities across the state were hit hard in recent years. Knowing what to do in an emergency can save lives, and I hope that Missouri families take time this week to get prepared before disaster strikes.”
In McCaskill’s role leading the Homeland Security Committee, she works closely with FEMA and conducts oversight over the agency. As part of Missouri’s Severe Weather Awareness Week, a statewide tornado drill will be held on Tuesday, March 6.
