McCaskill Votes to Approve President Trump’s Nominee for Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, the top-ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, voted to support the nomination of Elaine C. Duke to become the next Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

“There’s no room for partisan politics when it comes to protecting the United States homeland—and it’s important that our nominees for the Department of Homeland Security share that commitment,” McCaskill said. “Elaine Duke has a long and distinguished career in public service and understands the importance of keeping our nation safe.”

Duke’s experience at the Department of Homeland Security includes work in both the Barack Obama and George W. Bush Administrations. During her confirmation hearing last week, McCaskill discussed with Duke the importance of fully funding the Coast Guard, aviation security, and other critical national security programs. McCaskill also pressed the nominee on the lack of cost-benefit analyses and funding plans for the Administration’s planned border wall.

Now that Duke has passed out of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, her nomination will move to consideration by the full Senate.
