WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today signaled her support for General John Kelly USMC (Ret.), President-elect Trump’s nominee to head the Department of Homeland Security, who faced questions from Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, where McCaskill is the lead Democrat.

“I thought General Kelly gave great answers today. He didn’t do what a lot of nominees do and try to sidestep questions—I thought he was very straight-forward,” McCaskill said. “I’m confident he will be a moderating influence on the incoming administration.”
McCaskill had recently met with Kelly in anticipation of today’s hearing, where she committed to conducting a tough, comprehensive and fair nomination process.
McCaskill also recently met earlier this week with outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, where they discussed the challenges and opportunities facing his agency as McCaskill begins her work as the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. She will lead the committee along with Republican Chairman Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.
McCaskill has served on both the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and Armed Services Committee since joining the Senate in 2007, and has made protecting American families at home and abroad a top priority.
