WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement regarding the retirement of Transportation Security Administration Administrator John Pistole:
“The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has the challenging – but critical – mission of protecting the nation’s transportation systems while ensuring the freedom of movement for people and commerce. Few people know this mission better than Administrator John Pistole. For nearly 5 years, he has led the agency with dedication and a forward-thinking approach. During his distinguished tenure at TSA, he modernized a number of agency policies to enhance the security of the traveling public while making air travel more convenient. A key example of Administrator Pistole’s efforts was the creation of the Pre Check program, which allows trusted travelers who pass background checks to go through an expedited screening process at our nation’s airports. His commitment to public service is as admirable as it has been remarkable, having served over 30 years in the federal government — including six years as Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He has forged strong relationships with Members from both sides of the aisle, and I know I speak for many of us when I say that we will miss his strong leadership at TSA and the Department of Homeland Security. I wish John and his family all the best as they start this new chapter in their lives, and I thank him for his service to the agency and our nation. I look forward to working with the Administration and our colleagues in the Senate to confirm a successor for this crucial leadership position as soon as possible.”
