Chairman Carper’s Statement on the One Year Anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing

WASHINGTON— Today, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement on the one year anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing:

“Today, we remember those who lost their lives one year ago as a result of the Boston Marathon attacks, as well as the many other victims, friends and families whose lives will forever be altered by that senseless act,” said Chairman Carper. “This anniversary, and every day, should be a call to action to honor their memories and use that tragedy to grow as a nation. Just as we did in the years after 9/11, today we honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing by continuing to live our lives and proving that these cowardly acts do not deter the American spirit. That is why I am encouraged that this year’s race will continue undeterred – a powerful symbol that the city of Boston and our nation have emerged from this tragedy stronger than ever.  While nothing we do will be able to bring back the loved ones lost, we must learn all that we can from this heartbreaking event and work to improve both our prevention and response efforts. That’s why, as part of our Committee’s ongoing oversight of this event, we will be holding a hearing later this month to discuss what we have learned one year later and how we are working to make Americans safer moving forward. ”
