WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Monday issued the following statement on the disrupted plot to detonate and IED:
“This afternoon I was briefed by Secretary Napolitano and White House Counterterrorism Advisor John Brennan about the disruption of another terrorist bomb plot. The most important fact is that a terrorist plan to kill innocent people was stopped before anyone was in danger.
“Secretary Napolitano and Mr. Brennan assured me that all relevant intelligence and counter-terrorism agencies of our government were involved in this successful action and received extraordinary support from our international counter-terrorism partners.
“I was told that no public announcement of the plot was made at the time in order to protect ongoing counterterrorism operations in the field. Finally, Secretary Napolitano and Mr. Brennan told me there was no evidence the plot was tied to the first anniversary of the killing of Osama Bin Laden. I expect further details of this operation will be disclosed when doing so will not jeopardize our national security. ”
