WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) released the following statement after a news report indicated that President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order as soon as this week to take control of the U.S. Postal Service:
“If President Trump moves forward with this action to take over and privatize the Postal Service – not only will it be completely illegal – it will harm veterans, small business owners, rural communities, and all Americans who depend on the Postal Service for timely and reliable mail delivery. President Trump is clearly only interested in boosting private companies and leaving Americans without the critical lifeline the Postal Service provides. I call on the President to take the needs of everyday Americans seriously and reverse course.”
The Postal Service is an independent entity and has served the public for more than 250 years, providing reliable mail service to communities across the country and delivering everything from prescription medication to financial documents and packages. The Postal Service is the only carrier in the country that is required to deliver to every address.
Peters championed the passage of the bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act in 2022 to make historic financial and operational reforms to the United States Postal Service. The law eliminated the onerous prefunding requirement that had hurt the Postal Service financially, and integrated postal worker retirees’ health care with Medicare. The law also required the Postal Service to maintain its standard of delivering at least six days a week and created new transparency around Postal Service performance by requiring the publication of easily accessible local weekly service data on the Postal Service website.
