WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Gary Peters (MI) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) applauded an announcement from the Federal Emergency and Management Agency (FEMA) that they will distribute $931,930 to the village of Sanford, Michigan to purchase and demolish homes that were damaged as a result of dam failures in Midland County in May 2020. Removing these structures from a flood hazard zone and making the area into open space will help mitigate risks to lives and livelihoods from flooding. The funding is provided by the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), which helps communities reduce the effects of disasters when they occur. Peters and Stabenow supported the request from Governor Whitmer for a major disaster declaration to provide these resources. As a result, Michigan communities, including Sanford, became eligible for federal grants targeting disaster relief and mitigation – including from the HMGP.
“After flooding nearly two years ago that resulted from dam failure, Mid-Michigan communities have worked to recover from that catastrophic event and protect themselves from future damage. However, it is clear more needs to be done and I applaud FEMA for continuing to provide assistance to towns in Midland County who are still vulnerable to damage from high water levels and flooding,” said Senator Peters. “I’m proud to have played a part in securing this funding that will help protect the community from future flooding damage. As Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee – with oversight of our nation’s federal disaster response – I’ll continue leading efforts to ensure Michiganders, our small businesses, and our communities can withstand future natural disasters.”
