WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), top Democrat on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement in response to the attacks that took place at Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, killing 36 people and injuring at least 147 others.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this horrific attack, their loved ones and the people of Turkey. This attack is yet another tragic reminder of the threats we face from terrorists who indiscriminately employ senseless violence with no regard for innocent lives or their own. It is also a reminder that we must remain vigilant not only here at home, but around the globe, in our efforts to prevent terrorist threats at our transportation hubs and other vulnerable locations where people congregate. Coordinating with our partners and allies abroad and sharing information between federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, and state and local entities is crucial to these efforts. I am carefully monitoring this ongoing situation and will continue to do so as we gather more information from our partners overseas.”
