WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, issued the following statement after Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz released a report on former FBI director James Comey’s handling of memos that documented private conversations with President Trump:
“The American public has a right to know the actions of high-level officials at the Department of Justice, the FBI, and intelligence agencies during 2016 and the presidential transition. Inspector General Horowitz’s detailed report, while narrow in scope, provides a much needed level of transparency about Mr. Comey’s actions while leading the FBI during this tumultuous period,” said Sen. Johnson.
“Mr. Comey is just one of many high-level officials whose actions must be reviewed and made public. To that end, I look forward to Mr. Horowitz’s forthcoming reports on FISA review and other leak reports. I also have requested information from the inspectors general of the Intelligence Community, the CIA and the NSA about their reviews of potential intelligence agency leaks of sensitive information during the relevant time period. Those inspectors general should follow Mr. Horowitz’s lead and provide the American people with more information detailing the actions of high-level officials.”
Senators Johnson and Grassley (R-Iowa) previously sent a letter in May to the inspector general of the intelligence community and a follow-up letter in July to the inspectors general of the NSA and CIA, both pushing for answers regarding the FBI’s apparent awareness of leaks to the media about ongoing investigations.
