Portman on Fox News: Biden Administration Deporting 80 Percent Less Than Obama Administration

This afternoon on Fox News’ Your World with Neil Cavuto, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH), Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, discussed his questioning of the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas last week on the lack of deportations of unlawful migrants during the Biden administration, which is 80 percent less than during the Obama administration.

Last month, the administration announced its intent to lift Title 42 which was put in place to allow border authorities to turn unlawful immigrants away due to the COVID-19 public health crisis. Currently about half of the unlawful immigrants who attempt to enter our country are turned away using Title 42. Portman has expressed multiple times that lifting Title 42 without an adequate plan to deter unlawful immigrants once the order is lifted as it will lead the current border crisis to catastrophe. While Border Patrol agents are busy processing an unprecedented number of individuals, children, and families attempting to enter the country unlawfully, drug cartels are smuggling illicit narcotics, like fentanyl, across the border and into the United States, resulting in a record number of overdose deaths in Ohio and throughout the country.

Portman’s response to the interview can be found below and a video can be found here.

PORTMAN ON QUESTIONING SECRETARY MAYORKAS ON LACK OF DEPORTATIONS OF UNLAWFUL MIGRANTS DURING BIDEN ADMINISTRATION:

“Well, Neil, he went on to say that my numbers were not accurate, that they had only deported a small number of people relative to the huge surge. I said 59,000. And then he said it was actually 74,000. He came back and said, actually, your number is right, Senator. So look, that’s about an 80 percent reduction of where they were back in the Obama administration in terms of deportations and about a 70 percent reduction from where they were in the Trump administration, and so they’re not being deported.”
