SENATOR COLLINS COMMENTS ON NEW NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR HOMELAND SECURITY

U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, today commented on the updated National Strategy for Homeland Security.

“I am pleased that the White House has updated the National Strategy for Homeland Security, which was originally prepared in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks,” noted Senator Collins. “The updated strategy improves upon the original in many crucial respects. It now recognizes, for example, the threat posed not just by Al Qaida, but also by homegrown terrorists. The updated strategy is also now all-hazards, emphasizing the fact that terrorism, catastrophic natural disasters, and other hazards require many similar capabilities. Moreover, it rightly acknowledges, and focuses more attention on, the increased risk posed by innovative weapons, such as improvised explosive devices. As one of the authors of the Safe Ports Act, I also am pleased that the revised strategy recognizes the value of maritime cargo security programs.”
