Delegation Announces Grants and Contracts to Alaska Programs

 

Washington, D.C. – The Alaska Congressional Delegation is pleased to announce the following grants:

Economic Development Administration

• $125,000 to University of Alaska Anchorage to fund the third year of a five-year Economic Development Program to help increase productivity, spur innovation and entrepreneurship, and increase long-term regional competitiveness and economic diversification.   

U.S. Department of Agriculture

• $32,731 to be used to purchase essential EMS equipment for the communities of Amber, Buckland, Deering, Kiana, Kivalina, Kobuk, Noatak, Noorvik, Point Hope, Selawik and Shungnak. 

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

• $3,863,717 to University of Alaska Fairbanks for pharmacology, physiology, and biological chemistry research.
• $2,750,419 to CSS Early Learning in Palmer for Head Start projects.
• $945,498 to Alaska Division of Public Health to build and strengthen epidemiologic, laboratory, and health information systems capacity to improve health outcomes for Alaskans.
• $359,667 to the State of Alaska Department of Health & Social Services for loan repayment.
• $344,736  to University of Alaska Anchorage for pharmacology, physiology, and biological chemistry research.
• $50,000 to Alaska Department of Public Health and Social Services for the chronic disease control cooperative agreement.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

• $2,307,209.27 to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities Central Region for permanent restoration of damages to the airport in Scammon Bay.
• $1,344,973.50 to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities Northern Region for permanent restoration of damages to the dump road in Shishmaref.

U.S. Department of Transportation

• $5,000,000 to the Alaska Department of Transportation to fund Emergency Relief from a November 2013 coastal storm, will be used for the repair or reconstruction of Federal-aid highways and roads on Federal lands that have suffered serious damage as a result of natural disasters or catastrophic failures from an external cause.
• $1,700,000 to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to fund Emergency Relief from floods in May 2013 will be used for the repair or reconstruction of Federal-aid highways and roads on Federal lands that have suffered serious damage as a result of natural disasters or catastrophic failures from an external cause.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

• $129,000 to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to fund project that will develop an estimate of the subsistence harvest of halibut in Alaska for the calendar year 2014.
• $220,904 to the Indigenous Peoples Council for Marine Mammals (IPCoMM) to continue the following 1). protect and maintain traditional subsistence uses of marine mammals in Alaskas coastal areas in cooperation with NMFS; 2). provide a strong statewide voice for Alaska Natives on marine mammal issues; 3). continue operations of two Alaska Native organizations (ANO) that are members of IPCoMM, that work with marine mammal species under NMFS jurisdiction, and in areas where Alaska Natives use marine mammals for subsistence.
• $500,000 to fund the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Tribal Research and Restoration Program Competitive Salmon Research and Restoration in Alaska.
• $165,949 to University of Alaska Fairbanks to fund RUSALCA data efforts and to accommodate and shares costs with several existing data management projects that are parallel in scope.
• $361,945 to the Alaska Native Harbor Seal Commission to will facilitate equitable participation by Alaskan Natives in the management of marine mammals for subsistence use, provide for sustainable use of marine mammals for subsistence purposes, benefit marine mammals and their habitat and encourage local participation in marine mammal science and management.

National Science Foundation

• $542,735 to University of Alaska Fairbanks to study the impacts on the evolution and extinction of horses in ice-age Beringia.
• $15,756 to the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council to support a small workshop to be held in Zhaigansk, Sakha Republic, Russia, in August 2014 as part of the Network or Indigenous Knowledge (NIK).
• $140,170 to University of Alaska Fairbanks to fund applied mathematics research is devoted to some fundamental issues of propagation of waves in various media.
