Levin statement on European Commission tax investigations

WASHINGTON – Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, issued the following statement today on the European Commission’s announcement that it will investigate offshore tax avoidance in three European nations:

“Today’s announcement by the European Commission puts the spotlight on tax avoidance by large multinationals and by key countries that make that tax avoidance possible. The EC’s decision adds momentum to an ongoing global effort to ensure that profitable corporations, which count on governments to provide a host of basic public services, do not shrug off their tax obligations to support those services. I’m hopeful that the EU investigation will not only add important information on how the tax avoidance game is played, but also add to the pressure on multinationals and enabling countries to end the gimmicks and schemes.”
